Jim Bagwell
a r t i s t b i o g r a p h y

Jim Bagwell is lives and works out of Central Florida. His photography features a variety of portrait, landscape, color and black-and-white compositions. His current personal project is to capture more of the wild and nostalgic side of old Florida before it gets entirely developed.

Born in 1946 in New Jersey, Jim’s romance with photography was kindled in 1966 when he was drafted into the army. He remembers buying a cheap disposable camera before leaving for a two years in the army, taking pictures of family, friends and “things I wanted to remember.”

Since moving to Florida in 1976 Jim has worked in a variety of technical capacities for Walt Disney World, meanwhile taking visual composition courses they offer to employees. His interest in photography has since grown into a lifelong hobby and appreciation— believing that it is not merely important as an art form but also as personal treasures because “there’ll be a day when that’s all you have.”

His artistic influence can be traced to independent photographer and favorite course instructor George Wilson, who believes in good light, composition and minimal photoshop; the Vietnam refugee portraits of Eddie Adams; the imaginative celebrity portraits of Annie Leibovitz; and the vintage style of Clyde Butcher— the Ansel Adams of the Everglades.

Several of Jim’s photos have been showcased in the SOBO gallery of Winter Garden. His personal favorites, however, are of his friends and family and are kept in his home.

“The most beautiful sunset I can think of shooting doesn’t mean half as much as a mediocre picture of someone I care about.”
